The data set contains daily CO2 production, cumulative CO2 production, MPN, and Carbon Mass Balance results for experiments with crude oil and diesel. Purpose:

Mesocosms with nitrogen and phosphorus additions were carried out to investigate the intensity of enhancement on overall contaminant mineralization in sandy beach sediments with low organic matter content and low inorganic nutrient concentrations. The objective of the present study was to assess the efficacy of indigenous microbial populations under natural environmental conditions in Alabama (USA) sandy beaches on biodegrading diesel and crude oil.

Methods:

Sediments were collected and amended with diesel (+nutrient, -nutrients) or crude oil (+nutrients,-nutrients). CO2 production was measured daily on a Gas Chromatograph daily for 42 days. The fraction of remaining hydrocarbons remaining in the soil at the end of the experiment was measured in accordance with EPA method 3550. The most probable technique was used to enumerate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, alkane, and total hydrocarbon degraders.

Instruments:

GC with a Thermal Conductivity Detector (Shimadzu 8A).

Error Analysis:

The standard error of the mean is reported where appropriate.
