Abstract:

Datasets include simulated virtual drifter trajectories based on output from different numerical ocean circulation models: WFS ROMS, Global HYCOM, Gulf of Mexico HYCOM, SABGOM, RTOFS; satellite imagery inferred surface oil slick locations that were used to initialize and later verify the trajectory models. Purpose:

To provide Lagrangian trajectory model simulation as a rapid response to the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill.

Data Parameters and Units:

Latitude (Deg N), longitude (Deg E), currents velocity (m/s), year day, temperature (Deg C), wind speed (m/s). The netCDF files for figures 1-7 in the publication.

Methods:

In response to the Gulf of Mexico Deepwater Horizon oil spill, a Lagrangian trajectory modeling system was implemented immediately upon spill onset by marshaling numerical model and satellite remote sensing resources available from existing coastal ocean-observing activities. Surface oil locations inferred from satellite imagery were used to re-initialize the positions of virtual particles in this ensemble of trajectory models, and the particles were tracked using forecast surface currents, with new particles added to simulate the continual release of oil from the well.
