Abstract:
Samples of surf zone seawater were collected to track the occurrence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons along beaches of the West Florida Panhandle. Water samples (1 liter) were extracted by standard procedures for analysis of naphthalene, phenanthrene, and chrysene and their 1-3 alkylated forms by GC/MS SIM. Trace amounts were found after beach oiling, and rapidly decreased to undetectable levels.

Purpose:
Monitoring concentrations of PAHs that are characteristic of crude petroleum via detection of naphthalene, phenanthrene, and chrysene and also alkylated naphthalenes, phenanthrenes, and chrysenes in the surf water at beaches in Santa Rosa and Escambia Counties in Florida following the BP MC 252 well failure.

Methods:
Collection: Chain of Custody Sheets were filled out for samples. Water grab samples from the surf zone were taken in precleanned amber glass one liter containers and placed on ice. Analysis was generally within a few hours of sampling. Extraction: Extractions were done by extracting the 1 liter aqueous sample with dichloromethane three times in a separatory funnel. The dichloromethane extract was dried down at 38 C to 1ml for analysis. GC-MS Analysis: PAHs were analyzed by GC-MS (Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry) using deuterated internal standards of naphthalene, phenanthrene, and chrysene for quantification.
