Abstract:
The dataset contains information on specific immune function parameters of elasmobranch and teleost species sampled in the Gulf of Mexico near the DWH site in the months following the oil spill. Immune parameters were measured in plasma collected from live animals. Data are included for 17 elasmobranch species and 6 teleost species. Specific plasma immune function parameters include activity of enzymes (lysozyme, superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione-S-transferase (GST)), levels of uric acid and reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (ROS/RNS) in plasma, and percentages of protein components in plasma. Whole blood was collected from live animals, plasma immediately separated through centrifugation, and stored in liquid nitrogen until transport back to the lab, where storage continued at -80 C until analyses. Lysozyme activity was measured using a modified turbidity assay. SOD, ROS/RNS, GST and uric acid were measured using commercially available assay kits. Plasma protein profiles were determined using agarose gel electrophoresis and analysis through gel documentation software. Other information included in this data set include collection date, cruise during which samples were collected, gear used, latitude and longitude.

Purpose:
The dataset was developed as a summary of results obtained through BP/FIO Gulf Oil Spill Prevention, Response & Recovery Grants Program funding. This dataset includes available data regarding analyses of plasma immune function parameters from elasmobranch and teleost species sampled near DWH oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico
Data Parameters and Units:
WALSH-BP-Analyses-Final Report.xls-- Sample ID, Code, Common Name (Scalloped Hammerhead, Silky, Sandbar, Spinner, Blacktip, Dusky, Pelagic Stingray, Bull, Tiger, Yellowfin Tuna, Swordfish, Escolar, Mahi Mahi, Oilfish, Baracuda, Longfin Mako, Night Shark, Nurse Shark, Blue Shark), Date (MM/DD/YYYY), Cruise Name, Gear (Longline, Drumline, Rod/Reel), Latitude (d.deg.), Longitude (d.deg.), Lysozyme activity (ug/mL), SOD activity (U/mL), ROS/RNS activity (nM DCF), GST activity (mU/mL), Uric Acid (uM), Plasma Protein Profiles (% band, grouped by human fractions: albumin, alpha 1, alpa 2, beta, gamma, pre-gamma). The units included in the dataset are specific for each analyses. Plasma immune function parameters are reported either as enzyme activity or concentration in the plasma. Lysozyme activity is reported in µg equivalents of hen egg white lysozyme per milliliter of plasma (µg/mL). Superoxide dismutase activity is reported as Units/mL of plasma (U/mL). Glutathione-S-transferase activity is reported as milliUnits/ mL of plasma (mU/mL). Reactive oxygen and nitrogen species is reported as nM of DCF formed, and uric acid is reported as concentration in µM. Plasma protein components are reported as percentage of total protein in each plasma fraction .
