Abstract:

This experiment was conducted to test the performance of the new equipment (centrifugal platform). Seawater samples were collected from two locations (station 7 and 33) in the Gulf of Mexico on September 03, 2019. Both filtered and unfiltered samples were obtained. Filtration was done with 0.47µm filter paper to remove phytoplankton. The testing involved irradiation of filtered and unfiltered water from two locations (station 7 and 33) with ultraviolet light at 365 nm and the fluorescence intensities were recorded. This was followed by irradiation of combinations of distilled water or filtered and unfiltered water from the 2 locations with nonane, or 5 or 10 ppm crude oil.

Purpose:

To test the performance of the new equipment for the seawater sample testing.

Data Parameters and Units:

Data consists of 2 Excel files. One file contains longitude and latitude coordinates of locations of sample collection in the Gulf of Mexico, while the other contains wavelength and corresponding fluorescence intensities, and includes - wavelength (nm) and fluorescence intensity of either filtered sample from station 7 (7f), unfiltered sample from station 7 (7u), filtered sample from station 33 (33f), unfiltered sample from station 33 (33u), or distilled water (pure water). The worksheet "Fig 2" shows fluorescence intensity data for both filtered and unfiltered water obtained from 2 locations in the Gulf of Mexico (station 7 and 33). The worksheet "Fig 3" shows the fluorescence intensities of seawater sample from location 33 (filtered) before and after solid-phase extraction (SPE). 10 mL sample and 1 mL eluent (nonane) are applied in the test to see if there is interference from Colored Dissolved Organic Matter (CDOM). The worksheet "Fig 4" shows the fluorescence intensities of distilled water mixed with 5 ppm and 10 ppm crude oil. The worksheet "Fig 5" shows the fluorescence intensities of filtered seawater sample obtained from location 33 and mixed with 5 ppm and 10 ppm crude oil. The worksheet "Fig 6" shows the fluorescence intensities of 10 ppm seawater sample-oil mixture before and after SPE with our centrifugal platform. The mixed sample and eluent (nonane) used are 10 mL and 1mL, respectively.
