Abstract:

Aromatic fractions of crude oil can be stimulated by UV light and emit fluorescent light. If all the other conditions are fixed, the more crude oil in the water, the stronger the fluorescence. Thus, the fluorescence detection method was adopted to determine the existence and concentration of the oil in water. Typically, crude oil absorbs light of wavelength between 300 nm and 400 nm, and emits light in the range from 450 nm to 650 nm. For Gulf of Mexico crude oil, NOAA used excitation wavelength of 370 nm and emission wavelength of 460 nm in their recent oil concentration monitoring for the Deepwater Horizon oil spill incident. Either spectrometer or photodiode circuit can be used to detect the fluorescence. Calibration was conducted to find the relationship between the detected signal intensity and the concentration of the crude oil in water. The standard testing samples was applied to test the performance of the instrument we developed and calibrated the instrument.
