Abstract:

This dataset contains a series of experiments data of images in the laboratory to study bubble plumes under different source conditions: (1) air-stone diffuser, (2) single-orifice diffuser, and (3) each with two different gas flow rates. Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) was used to measure the velocity field of water in the bubble plumes. With different diffusers, we are able to generate different bubble size distribution while maintaining the same gas flow rate. The imagery in this dataset provides new observations of plume velocity with different bubble sizes, population, and flow rates, which can be used to evaluate the integral and turbulent behavior of bubble plumes. Purpose:

To study bubble plumes with different source dynamics (i.e., diffuser type, bubble size distribution, population).

Data Parameters and Units:

Water velocity (cm/s), bubble size (mm), gas flow rate (L/min), distance above the source (cm).

Methods:

The experiments were conducted in a 1 m x 1 m x 1.1 m deep laboratory tank filled with fresh water. A planar laser (532 nm) provided illumination for image capture at 5-millisecond intervals; image pairs were obtained at two different heights above the bubble source (z = 0.22 ~ 0.61 m) to provide wide spatial coverage. The algorithm described by Liao and Cowen (2005) was used in PIV processing.

Instruments:

Phantom Miro M340 camera (Vision Research, Inc.), 532 nm continuous wave laser (Millennia eV, Spectra-Physics).
