Abstract:

This dataset contains sediment sampling data along the Gulf of Mexico for the BP (British Petroleum) oil spill from several studies. There are 164 separate sheets for 164 different chemicals. The sampling date was from April 2010 to December 2010. This dataset is used to estimate the oil impact date based on chemical concentration change for the Beach Exposure And Child Health Study (BEACHES) project. Purpose:

To develop the chemical concentrations changes (CCC) method which is used to estimate the impact date based upon the changes in sediment chemical concentrations.

Data Parameters and Units:

The dataset includes 164 Excel files named after different chemicals. Two datasets were consolidated for the chemical concentrations changes (CCC) analysis. In each Excel file, there is a header (Column D) named as ‘Study Name’. If the study name is ‘EPA’, the measurements were from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (U.S. EPA) dataset. Otherwise, those were from the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative Information and Data Cooperative (GRIIDC) British Petroleum (BP) dataset. For details on the column name and description, please refer to data file dictionary "Pages from ShorelineChemistry_SH-04v01-02.pdf" included in the dataset. Main parameters: Study name, Location or station ID, Sample date (MM/DD/YYYY), Latitude and longitude (decimal degrees), Field sample material, Chemical name, Chemical code, Chemical concentration (mg/kg; μg/kg; μg/L; mg/L; μg/g).

Methods:

The sediment sampling data were downloaded from the U.S. EPA website (https://edg.epa.gov/data/Public/OLEM/DWH_sediment_Sampling.zip). Chemistry data associated with shoreline sediment and soil samples were downloaded from the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative Information and Data Cooperative (GRIIDC) Unique Dataset Identifier (UDI): BP.x750.000:0027 (DOI:10.7266/N7KK996C). 2010 sediment data of 164 chosen chemicals from EPA and GRIIDC-BP dataset were taken and merged together in the Excel files to estimate the oil impact date based on the changes in sediment chemical concentrations. The ‘impact date’ here means the first time the oil reached the coast based on our calculation.
