Abstract:
The goal of this project is to determine soil adherence (after hand presses and 1 hour of play) and surface area of hands for the 122 children who were videotaped. Along with the raw data, the dataset also includes additional data (e.g., environmental conditions, beach locations, child demographics, condition of hands) that might influence the measures of soil adherence or be of interest to compare. The collection of environmental data associated with this project is available under GRIIDC Unique Dataset Identifier (UDI) R6.x828.000:0006 (DOI: 10.7266/n7-rq3z-hq57). This dataset supports the publications: Tomenchok, L. E., Gidley, M. L., Mena, K. D., Ferguson, A. C., & Solo-Gabriele, H. M. (2020). Data Parameters and Units:
Child Number, Child Full ID, Sample ID, Adhered Grain Size- Body (microns), Adhered Grain Size -Hands (microns), Limitation (0 none, 1 limits, 2 limits), Hand Soil adherence (mg/cm2), Body Soil Adherence (mg/cm2), Adjusted Body Adherence (mg/cm2), Environmental Grain Size (microns), Environmental Humidity (%), Sand Temp (Celsius), Air Temp (Celsius), Water Temp (Celsius), Condition of Testing (D, S, W), Sunscreen(B): No/Yes, Sunscreen (RA): No/Yes, Sex (F/M), Height (inches), Height (cm), Weight (Kg), Age (months), Age Group, Beach Location, Age (Years), Body Adherence Lab, Dry Weight (g), Dry weight of hand press soil (g), Both hands area (cm2), Race of Child, Race of Parent, Last Activity by Video, Last Location By Video.
Methods:
Hand adherence: Children's hands are conditioned with sunscreen, or water or left as dry and hands are pressed into trays loaded with soil. Hands are rinsed and sand collected into plastic bags. Sand is sent to a laboratory for weight analysis and sand soil diameter analysis.
Body adherence: Following 1 hour of play, children's bodies are rinsed in pools, sand is collected from pools and sent to a laboratory for weight analysis and sand soil diameter analysis.
Last location and activity of each child were observed and recorded from videotaped data for comparison to the "Body Adherence Data".
