Abstract:

To fully assess the impacts of Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil on the vertebrate stress response and the trajectory for recovery, our research integrated molecular, cellular, gland/organ and whole animal physiological and behavioral studies using a benthic marine teleost, the Gulf toadfish, a resident of the Gulf of Mexico. These studies evaluated multiple pathways (e.g., pituitary fatigue, reduced receptor sensitivity, disruption or overstimulation of cortisol biosynthesis) and the consequence of these changes at the whole animal level (e.g., changes in carbohydrate metabolism, immune capacity and responses to natural stresses such as predation and social interaction). In this particular experiment, the Gulf toadfish was exposed to a concentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) for 28 days followed by a period of 28 days recovery. The temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen concentrations in the water column were measured. Fluorescence was also measured. These experiments were completed at Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science (RSMAS), University of Miami, Marine Technology & Life Sciences Seawater Complex (MTLSS) Building, room 211 between January 2019 to December 2019.

Purpose:

These data were collected to monitor water chemistry during a 28 day exposure to DWH oil and a 28 day recovery from DWH oil.

Data Parameters and Units:

Replicate Sample ID, Salinity (ppt), temperature (degrees C), dissolved oxygen (mg/L), water fluorescence, water PAH concentration (sum total PAHs). The naming convention for replicate sample ID is where A = Sample type (B= blank; S0.01 = 0.01% HEWAF solution; S0.1 = 0.1% HEWAF solution; S0.5 = 0.5% HEWAF solution; S1 = 1% HEWAF solution; S10 = 10% HEWAF solution;C = controls; L = low concentration exposure; M = medium concentration exposure; H = high concentration exposure); T = Trial # (3); X = Sample type (CE = composite exposure period; I = individual sample); MM = month; DD = day; YY = year. Please note that - NM = not measured, and the yellow highlight indicates suspicious sample.
