Abstract:

Gulf of Mexico (GOM) application of the MIT general circulation model (MITgcm) output was generated by the Ocean State Estimation at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and the GOM forward model solution for 2009-2016 was downloaded from the ECCO data server (http://www.ecco.ucsd.edu/gom.html). This dataset contains the data used to create the figures for the publication, as well as the binary and Matlab data formatted forward model output. Purpose:

Using a recently developed tool, the multiscale window transform (MWT) and the theory of canonical energy transfer, the role of multi-scale interactions and instabilities in the Gulf of Mexico Loop Current eddy shedding is investigated in a three-scale energetics framework, in which the Loop Current (LC) system is reconstructed onto a background flow window, a mesoscale eddy window and a high-frequency frontal eddy window.

Data Parameters and Units:

Parameters and units are documented in text-based Readme files corresponding to sixteen figures from the publication.

Methods:

See the publication for details on the multiscale decomposition and analysis. The binary model data were downloaded by GRIIDC in January 2022 and converted to Matlab data format using the MITgcm utility script rdslice.m. The daily variable fields were saved in a Matlab structure, one file per day, organized by year. Files specifying the model grid and example reader files are also included; the reading script needs to be tailored to the GoM output by the user.
