Abstract:

This dataset includes simulations of floc mass concentration in a fully turbulent field, exploring the sensitivity of flocculation processes in shallow-water to settling velocity, wave breaking, and Langmuir turbulence. The velocity fields were computed using the National Center for Atmospheric Research Large Eddy Simulation (NCAR-LES) model. Results are presented for 27 different floc size classes as a function of time, depth, and horizontal position. Purpose:

To study flocculation (aggregation and breakup) of particles in wave-driven turbulence in shallow water.

Data Parameters and Units:

Time[hours], Diameter of floc[micron,um], vertical coordinate[m, positive upward], grid-spacing in x (downwind) coordinate[m], grid-spacing in y (cross-wind) coordinate[m], length of domain in x-direction[m], length of domain in y-direction[m], water depth[m], floc mass concentration[kg/m^3 or g/L]. The dataset also includes a readme file.

Methods:

The velocity fields are computed using the NCAR-LES model (Sullivan and McWilliams 2010). The turbulent boundary fields are computed on a finite-size domain with doubly periodic boundary conditions in the horizontal directions. We chose 10 m/s as u_10, the wind speed at 10 meters above the surface, corresponding to wind stress of 0.159 N/m^2, and a surface friction velocity of 0.0126 m/s. These are 27 floc size bins ranging from 0.5 um to 4096 um, with floc density ranging from 2650.0 kg/m^3 to 1025.7 kg/m^3. The initial suspended mass concentration is set to zero for all size bins. The water column is well mixed, and all simulations start from a fully turbulent field sourced from a spin-up run without flocs. More details of the model configuration can be found in the associated publication, Liu et al., 2019. There are seven experiments, the benchmark and four sensitivity tests on erosion fluxes: (1) the benchmark (BM) includes flocculation processes and is driven by wind and waves in equilibrium with the wind; (2) S1 decreases the erodibility by a factor of 10; (3) S2 increases the erodibility by a factor of 10; (4) S3 decreasing the settling velocities by a factor of 10; (5) S4 increases the settling velocities by a factor of 10; (6) B2 excludes wave breaking; and (7) B3 excludes wave-driven Langmuir turbulence.
