Abstract:

Soil samples were collected from 21 sites of variable oiling levels in northern Barataria Bay in May 2018. For the soil microbial community, DNA was extracted from soil samples, sequenced with Illumina MiSeq, and the sequence data processed with QIIME.

Purpose:

The purpose of this study is to determine how the soil microbial community was affected following the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill.

Data Parameters and Units:

The data are given as a table of operational taxonomic units (OTUs) by sample, with the lowest assigned taxonomy for each OTU.

Methods:

The V4 region of the extracted soil DNA was PCR amplified and sequenced. The sequences were processed using the DADA2 program in QIIME2. Taxonomy was assigned with the sk-learn classifier through QIIME2 against the Greengenes reference database version 13_8. Spurious sequences were filtered by removing those not identified at the phylum level.
