Abstract:

Data on the response of macroinvertebrates to oiling from Deepwater Horizon (DWH) were gathered from various sources including publicly available dataset from GoMRI-GRIIDC, the Natural Resource Damage Assessment (NRDA), and others, as well as literature from other published and unpublished studies. Data acquired ranged from 2010-2019. Additionally, information from studies summarizing periwinkle densities following non-DWH restoration efforts was collected and are included in this dataset.

Purpose:

This dataset was created for use in a meta-analysis of marsh periwinkle responses to oiling and restoration trajectory.

Data Parameters and Units:

The worksheet "Oiling and planting dataset": Source (Primary investigator associated with the dataset), Site ID (originates from the dataset), Site type (Oiling site classification - either reference, planted, or oiled), Site type (HO) [Oiling site classification for heavily oiled analysis. Site not included in the 'heavily oiled' dataset have 'NA' values], Marsh Zone [Location of the site relative to marsh edge: Zone 1 is approximately 0-6m from the seaward edge and represents the area of heaviest oiling; Zone 2 is inland zone 1 (roughly 6-15m from the marsh edge) and represents areas that were oiled], Year (Year of data collection; YYYY), Snail density (#/m2), SnailLength [Mean snail length at a site (mm) for all individuals measured greater than 6 mm], Biomass Density [Biomass of snails present at a site (g/m2), all snails included]. The worksheet "Restoration dataset": Source (Primary investigator associated with the dataset), Site ID (originates from the dataset), Site type (Oiling site classification - either reference or restored), Region (Area the density estimate refers to), Year (Year since restoration), Site Type [Site classification (Reference, Restored)], Snail Density_m2 [Snail density (number/m2)], n (Number of samples included).

Methods:

Data were obtained from publicly available repositories, published literature, and from authors/investigators. Values presented here are aggregated by site/year/zone/study combination. If a site was sampled multiple times per year, fall results were used for the analysis. The dataset includes unpublished data provided by the authors. Please refer to original studies for information on sampling methods or raw data.
