Abstract:

This dataset contains the input and output files from the Sunken Oil Simulator (SOSim) subsurface oil model. Model validation used data from the T/V Athos I spill, which occurred November 26, 2004, in the Delaware River outside of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Two oil distribution predictions are provided: one for the date of sampling by NOAA (2004-12-08) and another twelve days later (2004-12-20). The dataset also includes the Python code necessary to run the SOSim model, as well as instructions on the set-up and inputs required.

Purpose:

The purpose of this dataset is to demonstrate the model using the Athos I oil spill as a case study. Field data, bathymetry data, input data, and prediction results are included in this submission.

Data Parameters and Units:

Input: Field Data: Point, Longitude [degrees], Latitude [degrees], Concentration [% Surface Area fouled by oil], Time of Sample [YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS]. Bathymetry: Longitude [degrees], Latitude [degrees], Depth [m]. The model initialization input file is described in the included document ‘1. SOSim README.txt’. Output: Longitude [degrees], Latitude [degrees], Relative Concentration (probability of finding oil at a location [0-1]), Field Data Longitude (Location of NOAA sampling 2004-12-08, [degrees]), Field Data Latitude [degrees], Field Data Concentration [% surface area of “pom-poms” fouled by oil].
