Abstract:

This dataset contains sediment core photographs collected aboard R/V Point Sur cruise PS18-25 in the northern Gulf of Mexico (NGoM) from 2018-05-18 to 2018-05-23. The dataset also includes an excel file with the core collection date and location, site ID, core ID, and water depth. Ocean Instrument MC-800 Multicore was used to grab cores from sediments. Sediment cores were longitudinally split and photographed with a Nikon D5100 digital camera with a scale in metric units (cm and mm) for a visual representation of sediment stratigraphy, color, and visual properties. Cruise documentation was provided for the R/V Point Sur cruise PS18-25, led by chief scientist Dr. Arne Diercks. Other bulk density/porewater data from sediment cores collected during this cruise is available under GRIIDC Unique Dataset Identifier (UDI) R6.x811.000:0004 (DOI: 10.7266/n7-gzhr-0s83).

Purpose:

Visually describe and assess sediment cores for stratigraphy and stratigraphic integrity as well as identify visual indications in changes in sedimentation.

Data Parameters and Units:

The dataset contains sediment core photographs (unitless) organized under different sub-directories for 31 core IDs. An excel file contains the latitude and longitude (decimal degrees), water depth (m), core collection date (MM/DD/YYYY), site ID, and the corresponding core ID.

Instruments:

Ocean Instrument MC-800 Multicore, Shipek Grab Sampler, Nikon D5100.
