Abstract:

Subtidal and marsh sediment cores were collected at the Chandeleur Islands in the Gulf of Mexico (29.895448 N 88.827780 W) on 2018-05-07, eight years after the Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil spill. Sediment cores were extruded in 1-2 cm sections from the sediment-water interface to 12 cm below. Oil was visible ~ 4-6 cm below the sediment surface. DNA was extracted from triplicate cores and analyzed by Illumina MiSeq amplicon sequencing.

Purpose:

The purpose of this study was to examine the metagenomics of sediment eight after the DWH oil spill and to determine changes to the microbial community within the contaminated layers of sediment compared to unconaminated layers.

Methods:

Sediment cores were collected from the Chandeleur Islands in the Gulf of Mexico on May 7, 2018 in subtidal and marsh regions of the western side of the islands where oil from the DWH oil spill remains buried. Triplicate cores were extruded in 1-2 cm sections. DNA was extracted from the individual sections and sequenced by Illumina MiSeq amplicon analysis.
