Abstract:
Mesocosm experiments were performed with seawater collected from Galveston Bay, Texas. Alkanes were measured in filtered samples from two treatments: 1) control (seawater) and 2) diluted chemically enhanced water-accommodated fraction of crude oil. Alkanes from two fractions were collected: particle associated phase and dissolved phase. The extracted samples were analyzed using gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC/MS).

Methods:
Alkanes were collected for both particle associated phase and dissolved phase. Dissolved phase was collected for each sample passing through a filtration series (GF/D and then 0.2µm). The particle associated phase is defined as particles stayed on the GF/D and 0.2 µm filters. The dissolved phase for each sample was preserved in dichloromethane and extracted with liquid-liquid extraction with dichloromethane. The particle associated phase (i.e. filters) samples were stored at -20 ℃ before extraction. The filters for each sample (GF/D and 0.2 µm) were combined and extracted with dichloromethane. The extracted samples were analyzed on gas chromatography mass spectrometry. Particle associated phase concentrations were normalized to the volumes of water passed through the filters. Triplicate samples were collected for each treatment at four (4) time intervals: Day 0, 4, 8, and 16.
