Methods:
Water was collected from mesocosm tanks on days 0, 0.5, 1, 3, 6, 8, and 12. Three treatments were prepared: (1) Control, containing only seawater; (2) WAF, containing seawater and the water accommodated fraction of oil, and (3) DCEWAF, containing seawater and chemically enhanced WAF diluted by 10-fold. A fourth treatment containing seawater and Corexit alone with no oil was also prepared and sampled on days 0 and 12. Sampled water was filtered onto 0.2um PES membranes and frozen at -80°C until DNA extraction. Extracted DNA was used for PCR amplification of the V4 hyper-variable region of the 16S rRNA gene using primers 515F-806R. The resulting amplicon library was sequenced on the Illumina MiSeq platform.
