Abstract:

Results from two laboratory experiments on the fragmentation potential (experiment 1) and microbial respiration (experiment 2) of marine snow (MS) and marine oil snow (MOS) formed in roller tanks. The tanks were filled with Skeltonema grethae and (i) Macondo oil at a final conc. of 1 ml per L to form MOS, and (ii) filtered seawater to form MS. We measured organic carbon (OC) and organic nitrogen (ON) in single aggregates, and estimated oil equivalents (EOE) in the surrounding tank water.

Purpose:

The dataset is part of series of two laboratory experiments to determine the fragmentation potential of MOS and MS under varying turbulence.

Data Parameters and Units:

Oscillating frequency (Hz), Date Collected (MM/DD/YYYY), Sample Name, OC (organic carbon: micrograms per aggregate, µg), ON (organic nitrogen: micrograms per aggregate, µg), Treatment, Sample Type, Sample Volume, Dilution Factor, RFU (relative fluorescence units), EOE (estimated oil equivalents: milligrams per liter, mg/L), Aggregate ID, Slope (µmol/L/hr), r^2, R (nmol/agg/hr), R corrected (nmol/agg/hr). Please note that all the abbreviations are defined in the readme worksheet.

Methods:

OC and ON per aggregate: single aggregates were placed on precombusted glass fiber filters (GF/F) and stored at -20 degrees until analysis on a Carlo-Erba 1500 Elemental Analyzer, using acetanilide as a standard. EOE: 5 mL of tank water was extracted with 5 mL dichloromethane and stored in 20-mL scintillation vials at 4 degrees until analysis Approximately 3 mL of the DCM fraction was transferred into a quartz cuvette, and the maximum intensity was measured at an excitation wavelength of 322 nm and an emission wavelength of 376 nm in a Shimadzu spectrofluorophotometer (RF-5301PC; Shimadzu, Houston, TX, USA).
