Abstract:

Velocity and turbulence measurements were collected in March 2018 and November 2019 in the Air-Sea Interaction Saltwater Tank (ASIST) at the University of Miami. These data and related dataset R6.x806.000:0035 (doi: 10.7266/STH6HY6X) support the publication: Bogucki, D., Haus, B.K. and Barzegar, M., 2021. Is oceanic turbulence a lubricant for propagating non-breaking waves? Observations and parametrization of the turbulent energy dissipation beneath non-breaking waves. GRL (Revised). The dataset contains raw data (Vertical Microstructure Profiler – VMP - and current meter), MATLAB processing codes, and processed data. In particular, the microstructure data used to prepare figures for the paper to be submitted to the GRL for publication are included and examples of the VMP spectra. The VMP data were processed following the Rockland processing procedure. The code is included.

Purpose:

These data give access to the processing programs of the VMP shear profiler and examples of shear spectra.

Data Parameters and Units:

Time series of current speed at a fixed depth (cross-stream and along-stream, respectively, [cm/s]); frequency [cpm], and shear spectra [1/(s^2 cpm)]. Naming conventions, mean background flow speed, and observation depths are described in Readme style documents in the current meter and VMP subdirectories. Exported VMP variables are the standard suite; please refer to the related dataset under GRIIDC Unique Dataset Identifier (UDI) R6.x806.000:0035 (doi: 10.7266/STH6HY6X).

Methods:

Standard techniques to process microstructure shear from a VMP200 shear sensor; code is included. Additional experimental details are available in the related dataset under GRIIDC Unique Dataset Identifier (UDI) R6.x806.000:0035 (doi: 10.7266/STH6HY6X).

Instruments:

Vertical Microstructure Profiler 200 (VMP, Rockland Scientific) and Infinity-EM, Model AEM-USB current meter (JFE Advantech).
