Abstract:
This dataset contains measurements of Legacy and alternative per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in pelagic fishes collected aboard the R/V Weatherbird II (WB1810) of the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) from 2018-08-15 to 2019-03-01. Five pelagic species were collected in the GoM using pelagic longline and rod and reel gear. Per- and poly-fluorinated substances (PFASs) were extracted from liver samples following modified ion-pair extraction methods and confirmed and quantified using high performance liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS; Agilent 1290 Infinity II LC and 6470 MS/MS) through a negative electrospray ionization (ESI) source (Agilent Jet Stream) and operating under the multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode. The dataset contains the date and location (latitude and longitude) of sample collection in the Gulf of Mexico. The cruise documentation was provided for the R/V Weatherbird II (WB1810). The cruise was led by chief scientist Dr. Steven Murawski.

Purpose:
To investigate the presence of classic polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) compounds and three emerging PFAS replacement compounds in pelagic species in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM), we have sampled five pelagic and highly migratory species in the GoM to confirm their presence and quantify PFAS concentrations.
Data Parameters and Units:
Dataset contains 2 Excel files containing measurements of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) and cruise documentation.

Methods:
In August 2018 and March 2019, five pelagic species were collected in the Gulf of Mexico (GoM) using pelagic longline and rod and reel gear. Per- and poly-fluorinated substances (PFASs) were extracted from liver samples following modified ion-pair extraction methods and confirmed and quantified using high performance liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS; Agilent 1290 Infinity II LC and 6470 MS/MS) through a negative electrospray ionization (ESI) source (Agilent Jet Stream) and operating under the multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) mode.
