Abstract:

The viscosity of Louisiana Sweet Crude oil and methane-saturated Louisiana Sweet Crude oil was measured at 20 °C at varying pressures between 5 and 15 MPa. The viscosities were measured by means of a capillary tube viscometer. For determining the viscosity of gas-saturated oils, a piston accumulator was used to solubilize methane into the crude oil.

Purpose:

Viscosities are important for modeling and experimental analysis of oil spill related investigations.

Data Parameters and Units:

Temperature (°C), pressure (MPa), and viscosity (mPa s) of pure Louisiana Sweet Crude oil (LSC) and methane-saturated Louisiana Sweet Crude oil.

Methods:

The measurements have been conducted by the company Eurotechnica GmbH. The temperature was fixed at 20 °C while pressure was varied from 5-15 MPa. The viscosities were measured by means of a capillary tube viscometer (high-pressure multicomponent viscometer HPvis 500, Eurotechnica GmbH). For determining the viscosity of gas-saturated oils, a piston accumulator was used to solubilize methane into the crude oil.
