Abstract:

This dataset comprises part one of a two-part experiment to determine the impacts of tagging on the swimming performance and behavior of young adult mahi-mahi (Coryphaena hippurus) using swim tunnel respirometry and free-swimming video analysis. In this dataset, respirometry experiments were performed to directly quantify the swimming performance of control (n=15) and tagged (n=17) mahi-mahi to determine how tagging may impact specific parameters related to swimming ability.

Purpose:

This experiment was conducted to determine the impacts of tagging on the swimming performance and behavior of young-adult mahi-mahi.

Data Parameters and Units:

The file "Swim Tunnel Identifiers.txt": ID (Identification number of mahi-mahi), Mass (g), Fork length (cm), Total length (cm), Tagged (Is this mahi-mahi tagged; Yes/No), Tunnel (swim tunnel identifier; CH5 = swim tunnel identified as CH5; CH1 = swim tunnel identified as CH1), Ucrit (critical swimming speed), SMR (standard metabolic rate), MMR (maximum metabolic rate), Aerobic scope, and NA = not available for this experiment. The files "Mahi PSAT xx and xx_raw.txt"; e.g., Mahi PSAT 1 and 2_raw contains the swim tunnel information generated from mahi-mahi in the first trial of the experiment and includes - Phase (Was this portion of the experiment flushing water (flush, f*), waiting (w*), or measuring (m*)), Chamber vol (Volume of the swim chamber, mL), Tube vol (Volume of the swim tunnel tube, mL), Wet weight (Weight of the mahi-mahi, g), NaN = not available for this experiment. Please refer to "Swim Tunnel Identifiers.xlsx" for fish numbers that generated usable values. Fish identifiers that show “NA” did not produce data for this experiment because of an error. All mahi-mahi was raised at the University of Miami Experimental Hatchery from wild-caught parents.

Instruments:

90-L swim tunnel respirometers and AutoRespTM 2.1.0 software (Loligo Systems ApS, Denmark) was used to determine critical swim velocity (Ucrit), optimal swimming speeds (Uopt), aerobic scope, and oxygen consumption (MO2) for tagged and untagged individuals. A Pt100 fiber-optic probe and Fibox 3 mini sensor oxygen meter (PreSens Precision Sensing, Germany) were used to measure dissolved oxygen concentration.
