Abstract:

This dataset comprises part two of a two-part experiment to determine the impacts of tagging on the swimming performance and behavior of young-adult mahi-mahi (Coryphaena hippurus) using swim tunnel respirometry and free-swimming video analysis. Video analysis was performed to quantify the changes in swimming performance and behavior of control (n=24) and tagged (n=24) mahi-mahi to determine how tagging may impact specific parameters related to swimming performance and behavior. This dataset contains video files. The first part of the experiment using swim tunnel respirometry analysis can be found under GRIIDC Unique Dataset Identifier (UDI) R6.x804.000:0049 (DOI: 10.7266/NXRRGP4Z).

Purpose:

To obtain behavioral analysis data from both tagged and control groups tagged young adult mahi-mahi (Coryphaena hippurus).

Data Parameters and Units:

The file "Video Identifiers.txt": Video ID #, video group (Which cohort of mahi-mahi this video was collected from), Tagged, Untagged, Average Weight Tagged (g), Average Fork Length Tagged (g), Average Fork Length Untagged (g). The video files "GOPROXXX.MP4" contains the individual video information generated from behavioral analysis experiments; e.g., GoPro78 is the Lolitrack information generated from mahi-mahi in the first video of the experiment. The files "GoProXXX.txt": Frame (frame of the video this data was derived from), Error_* (whether or not there was an object in this frame), X-pos_* (where on the video x-axis this object was located), Y-pos_* (where on the video y-axis this object was located), Activity (whether or not there was activity from this object in this frame), velocity_ (the velocity of the object derived from this frame), Acceleration_ (the acceleration of the object derived from this frame), ActiveTime_* (total time (seconds) that this object has been active for the duration of the video), InactiveTime_* (total time (seconds) that this object has been inactive for the duration of the video), Distance moved_* (Total distance moved (m) for this object over the duration of the video). Please note that the video files that do not have associated text files included were insufficient to generate usable text files. All files for which text files were generated have those files included in the dataset, and the treatment groups refer to either tagged or control groups.

Methods:

All experiments were conducted between 24 - 26 degrees C. Fish morphometrics and tagging were conducted immediately prior to placing fish in swim chambers. Individual mahi-mahi was not identified for the use of successive videos; instead, mass and length were conducted for each individual to calculate a mean of these parameters for each treatment group.

Instruments:

GoPro Hero 5 (California, USA) to collect video recordings; Lolitrack 4.0 Video Tracking and Behavioral Analysis Software (Loligo® Systems ApS, Denmark) to analyze collected videos.
