Abstract:

This dataset is derived from a research cruise on board the R/V Walton Smith from June 8 to June 23, 2019 in the Gulf of Mexico as part of a mission to satellite tag adult control and oil exposed Mahi-Mahi (Coryphaena hippurus) and characterize the habitat where they were captured. Data included here is measured water quality parameters (temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, pH, ammonia, and Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs)) measured from on-board recovery/incubation tanks. This dataset was created by the Relationships of Effects of Cardiac Outcomes in fish for Validation of Ecological Risk (RECOVER) consortium and was made possible by a grant from the Gulf of Mexico Research Initiative. Purpose:

Monitoring water chemistry in two exposure tanks (oil and control) for a Mahi-Mahi (Coryphaena hippurus) satellite tagging study in the Gulf of Mexico.

Data Parameters and Units:

The headers and naming nomenclature are all described in various readme files in the dataset. Time in 24-hour eastern standard time, the temperature in degrees Celsius, salinity in parts per thousand, pH, ammonia in micrograms per liter, and oxygen in mg/L and percent saturation. PAH data is presented in micrograms per liter. "NA" in the dataset represents data that was not collected at a particular time point.

Methods:

PAHs were measured from water samples collected in 250 mL amber bottles directly from each tank. Samples were shipped overnight on ice to ALS Environmental (Kelso, WA) for gas chromatography/mass spectrometry—selective ion monitoring (GC/MS—SIM; based on EPA method 8270D). Ammonia concentrations were assessed using Micromodified Indophenol Blue with a colorimetric assay. Temperature and salinity were assessed using a WTW - Universal conductivity measuring cells TetraCon® 325.
