Abstract:

In this study, Red drum larvae (Sciaenops ocellatus) 24 hours post-fertilization were exposed for 48 hours to water accommodated fractions (WAFs) made with artificial seawater only or artificial seawater mixed natural dissolved organic matter. During the UV test, 8 consecutive hours of artificial UV-A radiation was delivered to test chambers during each day (16 h total), and integrated UV dose and UV intensity were measured during the exposure time. This dataset includes measurements of potential mitigating or enhancing effects of natural organic matter (NOM)/dissolved organic carbon (DOC) on crude oil and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) toxicity and bioavailability.

Purpose:

Establishing LC50s of combined exposure of PAHs, NOM and UV.

Data Parameters and Units:

Main parameters: Survival, pH, dissolved oxygen (mg/L), salinity (ppt), DOC and TOC concentration (dissolved organic carbon and total organic carbon concentration, mg/L), UV intensity (mW/cm2/s), PAH concentrations (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon concentrations, µg/L) The data for each test has been organized in different folders. The folders title were abbreviated with codes. Please refer to the following list to match the test to the corresponding assigned code. M201: 24 h natural organic matter and slick A crude oil exposure to red drum larvae. M202: LC50 following natural organic matter and high energy water accommodated fraction exposure in zebrafish larvae. M206: Background dissolved organic carbon in commercial and synthetic salts (chemistry test only). Please note that in all the red drum toxicity tests, the exposure started at ~ 24 hours post-fertilization. For the zebrafish test, it started at 0 hours post-fertilization.

Methods:

Water accommodated fractions (WAFs) of slick A oil were prepared daily with a dilution of 1 mg/L of oil to water and dilutions were made accordingly. 2 different waters were used for the WAFs preparation: 31 ppt saltwater prepared with Instant Ocean commercial sea salt; and 31 ppt seawater (prepared with Instant Ocean) with Suwannee River NOM added (nominal concentration= 10 mg/L), which was spun overnight. Test duration was of 48 h where mortality and water parameters (pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen) were measured daily for each replicate. Red drum larvae (Sciaenops ocellatus) were used for the test, and exposure started at 24 hours post-fertilization (hpf) and lasted to 72 hpf. During the UV test, 8 consecutive hours of artificial UV-A radiation was delivered to test chambers during each day (16 h total), and integrated UV dose and UV intensity were measured during the exposure time.

YSI ProODO oxygen meter, Orion Star A121 portable pH meter, refractometer, Biospherical BIC radiometer.
