Abstract:

We address the ecological relevance of the seemingly adaptive response of UV avoidance in mahi (Coryphaena hippurus) by developing a module for the Connectivity Modeling System (CMS, an open-source particle tracking model) to estimate the dose of solar radiations embryos receive while moving in the ocean. Calculations are based on the intensity of the surface irradiance, the coefficient of absorption of the wavelength considered, and the embryos’ depth at each Lagrangian time step. In the model, embryos were released throughout the year, between the surface and 100 m depth to encompass a wide range of potential spawning depth preferences, and the laboratory hourly measurements of terminal velocity were used to determine embryo buoyancy through time. Each virtual embryo was tracked for 44 hours, the maximum time to hatch based on the minimum surface water temperature in the Gulf of Mexico (ca. 20°C). This dataset contains the raw trajectories of the numerical modeling results from three simulations of mahi embryo dispersal using the CMS module introduced above: "Neutral" (for neutrally buoyant embryos), "no UV" (only exposed to visible light) and "UV-exposed" (exposed to visible light and UV-A during the first day of development), and provides the location and depth at each time step, along with the doses of ultraviolet-A for each of them. Purpose:

The focus of this dataset is to address the exposure of pelagic embryos to UV by explicitly estimating the dose of UV an embryo receives while moving in three dimensions in the open ocean. It is currently the first application of this new CMS module, a Lagrangian model addressing the exposure to solar radiation.

Methods:

The net surface shortwave radiations data used come from the NAVy Global Environmental Model (Hogan et al. 2014, Oceanography). While the irradiance data is available over three hour time step, it was re-interpolated over a one hour interval to better capture the changes in radiation intensity at dawn and dusk. The ocean circulation data were obtained from the HYCOM GOMl0.04 (https://www.hycom.org/data/goml0pt04/expt-31pt0), with hourly outputs with a 1/25° resolution (ca. <4 km) and 20 vertical layers. Virtual embryos were released every four days, all year long from 2013-01-01 - 2013-12-29, and tracked for 44 h. The coefficient of attenuation of light (Kd) was computed from the closest in situ measurements with a bioARGO float (Barbieux et al. 2017, SEANOE; https://www.seanoe.org/data/00383/49388/).
