Abstract:

This is the fourth part/stage of a multilayered experiment. All the data was collected from mixed stir and shaker experiments by a series of experimental runs. This dataset includes Kaolin, bentonite, organic content, fine sand & crude oil physical properties (weight, size, concentration) by electronic scales, microscope images analyzer; flow turbulence measured by Vectrino/ADV in laboratory experiments; and flocs properties using LabSFLOC-2 system. These data are used to study the formation of OMAs (oil mineral aggregates) and their settling dynamics as well as floc size distribution (settling velocity vs. floc size, and density). Purpose:

To study the formation of Oil-Mineral Aggregates (OMAs) and their settling dynamics.

Data Parameters and Units:

The excel files SCATTER_ D_Ws_Den - S13 - Done.xls and SCATTER_ D_Ws_Den - S17 - Done.xls: Actual SPM (Actual suspended particulate matter, 1000 mg/l); Size (Floc size, microns); Effective Density (kg/m^3); Ws (Settling velocity, mm/s); H_W_ratio (size ratio). Here, S13 =1.0 mL Crude oil + 0.2 g XthanGum/EPS +1000 ml Seawater; and S17 =1.0 mL Crude oil + 0.5 g Kaolin clay + 0.5 g Bentonite clay +0.1g XthanGum/EPS +1000 ml Seawater. The floc images (jpg) and floc settling video (avi) files: The image files "oil-ben-kao(10-13)" show oil-mineral mixture floc structures and the video files "mixedjar-stage4-(01-04)" show the settling floc behaviors collected from the labsfloc camera. Methods:

Sediment & oil flocs were created in laboratory jars (2L) using magnetic stirrer, and shaker devices were measured by LabSFLOC-2 system for floc size, settling velocity etc. The camera was positioned 230mm below the surface to view particles between the sizes of 5 microns and 8 millimeters. Settling flocs were seen as silhouettes and digital images were saved as non-codec compressed AVI files. With the use of Matlab routines, uncompressed images were analyzed. Using the HR Wallingford Ltd. DigiFloc software version 1.0 (Benson &Manning, 2013) and JavaScript, digital recording images were processed to obtain floc size and settling velocity spectra.
