Abstract:

The dataset contains a part of the experimental run data collected in laboratory studies by a series of tests. This is the third part of that multilayered experiment. This dataset includes calibrated turbulence data, oil/sediment flocs samples properties (density, size, concentration, and settling velocities) and images/videos by LabSFLOC-2 camera. These data were used to calibrate the new flume and new LabSFLOC-2 camera system, and also a comparison with oil mineral aggregates (OMAs) generated from jar tests data available under GRIIDC Unique Dataset Identifiers (UDIs) R6.x803.000:0003 and R6.x803.000:0004. All data were collected for OMAs in shaker-jar experiments.

Purpose:

To study the formation of Oil-Mineral Aggregates (OMAs) and their settling dynamics.

Data Parameters and Units:

The excel file SCATTER_ D_Ws_Den - S08.xls: Actual SPM (Actual suspended particulate matter, 1000 mg/l); Size (Floc size, microns); Effective Density (kg/m^3); Ws (Settling velocity, mm/s); H_W_ratio (size ratio). Here, S02 =1.0 mL Crude oil +1.0 g Kaolin clay + 1000 ml Seawater; and S08 = 1.0 g Kaolin clay + 1000 ml Seawater. The floc images (tif) files: "bentonite-oil" images show the floc microscope pictures of bentonite and oil mixtures, and "clay-oil" images show the kaolin clay floc photos of the floc samples. The floc settling video (avi) files: shows the floc settling behavior in the shaker jar experiments. Methods:

Sediment & oil flocs were created in laboratory jars (2L) using magnetic stirrer, and shaker devices were measured by LabSFLOC-2 system for floc size, settling velocity etc. The camera was positioned 230mm below the surface to view particles between the sizes of 5 microns and 8 millimeters. Settling flocs were seen as silhouettes and digital images were saved as non-codec compressed AVI files. With the use of Matlab routines, uncompressed images were analyzed. Using HR Wallingford Ltd. DigiFloc software version 1.0 (Benson &Manning, 2013) and JavaScript, digital recording images were processed to obtain floc size and settling velocity spectra.
