Abstract:

The dataset contains a part of the experimental run data collected in laboratory studies by a series of tests. This is the second part of that multilayered experiment. In this part of the experiment, more data on the settling dynamics of oil mineral aggregates (OMAs) was collected by measuring floc size, porosity, density and the settling velocity of each droplet using an instrument called LabSFLOC-2, which consists of a digital video microscope and processing package. This dataset contains images and video taken by LabSFLOC-2 camera and digital microscope analysis. The dataset also includes floc properties data (density, size, concentration, and settling velocities). These data are used to study the formation of OMAs in the laboratory.

Purpose:

To study the formation of Oil-Mineral Aggregates (OMAs) and their settling dynamics.

Data Parameters and Units:

The excel file SCATTER_ D_Ws_Den - S06 - Done.xls: Actual SPM (Actual suspended particulate matter, 1000 mg/l); Size (Floc size, microns); Effective Density (kg/m^3); Ws (Settling velocity, mm/s); H_W_ratio (size ratio). Here, S06 =1.0 mL Crude oil + 1.0 g Bentonite clay + 1000 ml Seawater. The floc images (tif) files: "O+B" image of oil-bentonite mixture sample; "O+C" image of oil-kaolin mixture sample; "O+E" image of oil-EPS mixture sample. The floc settling video (avi) files: shows the Labsfloc system captured the floc settling processes.

Methods:

Sediment & oil flocs were created in laboratory jars (2L) using magnetic stirrer, and shaker devices were measured by LabSFLOC-2 system for floc size, settling velocity etc. The camera was positioned 230mm below the surface to view particles between the sizes of 5 microns and 8 millimeters. Settling flocs were seen as silhouettes and digital images were saved as non-codec compressed AVI files. With the use of Matlab routines, uncompressed images were analyzed. Using HR Wallingford Ltd. DigiFloc software version 1.0 (Benson & Manning, 2013) and JavaScript, digital recording images were processed to obtain floc size and settling velocity spectra.
