Abstract:

This dataset is collected from the simultaneous particle image velocimetry and planar laser-induced fluorescence measurement of a refractive index matched buoyant oil jet injected into water.

Purpose:

To quantify the flow structure and turbulence in the near field of an immiscible buoyant oil jet

Data Parameters and Units:

This dataset contains two folders: "oil-jet" refers to the case of silicone oil jet injected into sugar water. 1. "single-phase" refers to the case of sugar water jet injected into sugar water. 2. "oil-jet" folder contains the raw data of the particle image velocimetry (PIV) and planer laser induced fluorescence (PLIF) at three downstream locations at jet Reynolds number Re=1230: "Re1230_0-2d": z/d=0.1-2.1, "Re1230_6-8d": z/d=5.7-7.8, "Re1230_12-14d": z/d=11.8-13.8. where z is the downstream location and d is the nozzle diameter. The resolution of the PIV data is 10.7 um/px, the resolution of the PLIF data is 11.4um/px. 3. "single-phase" folder contains the raw data of the PIV at two downstream locations at jet Reynolds number Re=1170: "Re1170_0-9d": z/d=0-9.5, "Re1170_9-18d": z/d=9-18.5. The resolution of the PIV data is 14.8 um/px.

Methods:

Data is collected by particle image velocimetry and planar laser-induced fluorescence. The type of oil injected in this dataset is silicone oil (polydimethylsiloxane, trimethylsiloxy terminated, Gelest Inc.). The density is 960 kg/m3, and the viscosity is 2.40×10-2 kg/m·s, the mean flow velocity at the nozzle exit is 3.1 m/s.
