Abstract:

In the laboratory, altered bacterial communities (BCs) due to crude oil exposure significantly enhanced the growth rate and yield of Prorocentrum texanum. In addition, oil-degrading bacteria from oil-contaminated sediment after the Texas City “Y” Oil Spill was isolated, and dinoflagellate growth when co-cultured with single bacterial isolates was investigated. This dataset contains the measurements showing the variation and changes in the growth rate of dinoflagellates depending on the bacterial treatment and different experiments. The cell numbers of dinoflagellates were measured by using light microscopy and a flow cytometer.

Purpose:

To explore the role of bacteria in the formation of harmful algal blooms (HABs) after oil spills.

Data Parameters and Units:

This dataset consists of 1 Excel file with multiple spreadsheets describing the data generated in different experiments and used to construct various figures and tables in the paper (not yet published). The description of each experiment is given within the first row of each spreadsheet and includes - time (days), I and II (replicates cell counts of dinoflagellate in duplicate or triplicate experiments of control, bacterial isolates C1-T3, and E1-Gal-T2), volume (ul), Average (cells per mL, or ~10^5^ cells per mL, etc), Standard deviation, and Growth rate. Additional headers include cell density of dinoflagellates in control, and various cultures exposed to oil; Growth effect (%)(relative abundance of Prorocentrum texanum in bacterial treatments, compared to that in control); Group I, Group II, and Group III are replicate measurements of Growth effect (Positive Control -addition of bacterial communities), Final (Average and standard deviation of group I, II and III) Main parameters: Cell density (cells per milliliter), Growth effect (%)- (cell number in treatment - cell number in control)/ cell number in control * 100
