Abstract:

The dataset includes oil droplet size distribution of oil in oil particle aggregates (OPAs), and oil mass percentages trapped by OPAs in laboratory setups. Purpose:

To investigate the impact of particle properties in the interaction of oil and particles in turbulent flows, including particle sizes, particle hydrophobicity and particle to oil concentration ratios. To aid the development of predictive models.

Data Parameters and Units:

The headers are Exp. No. (experiment number), Particle, Diameter (µm), Contact Angle (°), Particle Concentration (mg/L), Oil Concentration (mg/L), Comparison, surface 1, surface 2, AVE (average), STE (standard error), water 1, water 2, bottom 1, bottom 2, particle size, contact angle, size bins (µm), and Cp/Co. Cp/Co: the ratio of particle concentration to oil concentration. The unit of oil mass percentage is %.

Methods:

Droplet size distribution data were collected based on the images collected by confocal microscope. The software ImageJ was used to count the droplets and their sizes. Oil mass percentages were obtained based on the oil amount in each of the three layers in the baffled flask. Samples were extracted by dichloromethane three times and scanned by UV-Vis spectrophotometer to obtain the concentration values, then mass values based on the volume of each specimen. Duplicates were collected.
