Abstract:

This data set contains a video showing the behavior of IFO-120 oil and artificial seawater shaken together in a baffled flask. Views include the oil with no dispersant, dispersant applied at the top surface of the oil, and dispersant and oil pre-mixed and injected into the seawater.

Purpose:

To investigate the formation of oil droplets in turbulent flows, under different application of dispersants.

Data Parameters and Units:

IFO-120, no dispersant, dispersants applied on the surface, pre-mixed dispersants.

Methods:

120 mL of artificial seawater (33 ppt prepared with deionized water and Instant Ocean) was added to a 250 mL EPA baffled flask. The artificial seawater was mixed for at least 24 hours before use. 100 mL of IFO-120 oil was added to the flask at the water’s surface. 4 uL of Corexit9500 was added to the oil/water mixture for the cases in which dispersant was used. The mixture was shaken in the baffled flask at approximately 175 rpm.
