Abstract:

This dataset consists of tiff format images obtained in a laboratory tank by Planar Laser-Induced Fluorescence (PLIF) on a refractive index-matched oil jet/plume. Large field of view images are provided at three different levels of turbulence. High magnification images focus on the details of each flow field at three distances from the injection site, measured as the ratio of distance to the diameter of the injection nozzle. The experiments were conducted in the oil-spill laboratory at Johns Hopkins University. This dataset supports the publication: Xue, X., & Katz, J. (2019). Purpose:

This dataset provides flow visualization of the oil plume fragmentation and the formation of compound droplets. It also quantifies the droplet size distribution as well as the characteristics of the compound droplets.

Data Parameters and Units:

The large field of view PLIF data is collected with a resolution of 103.4um/pixel. The sampling rate is 500 frame per second (fps) for case 1(Re=594), 2(Re=1358) and 1000 fps for case 3(Re=2122). The high magnification PLIF data is collected with a resolution of 6.4um/pixel at 3 downstream locations centered at z/d=10.6, 20.6 and 30.6. The sampling rate is 1000 fps for all cases.

Methods:

The experiments were conducted in a 39 x 24.1 x 76.2 cm acrylic tank filled with sugar water to a depth of 54 cm. The silicone oil jet has an initial exit diameter of 10 mm. The center plane of the jet was illuminated with a 1mm thick sheet of a pulsed laser. The high magnification images focused on regions centered at z/d = 10.6, 20.6, and 30.6, where d is the nozzle diameter and z is the downstream distance from the nozzle. To create the "clean" high magnification images, a combined wavelet-Fourier filter was used to remove the stripes visible in the bright areas of the raw images. Daubechies wavelets provided basis functions for a two-dimensional multi-resolution (five levels) wave decomposition. That two-dimensional field was then Fourier transformed to identify the wavelength band containing the refraction-induced stripes. A Gaussian bandpass filter with a damping factor of 5 is applied in Fourier space to dampen the signature of the stripes. When reconstructed, the resultant images are masked to maintain the filtered image within the bright (oil) areas while preserving the original background.

Instruments:

The 527 nm Nd: YLF laser was synchronized with a high-speed camera (PCO-Tech PCO.dimax).
