Abstract:

Laboratory toxicity tests were completed with each species using chemically dispersed MC252 oil for 48 hours. Species exposed were Systellaspis debilis, Sergia sp, Sergestes sp, and members of the order Euphausiidae. Percent mortality at each exposure level was used to determine threshold concentrations via dose response modelling.

Purpose:

The purpose of this data is to determine lethal threshold exposure concentrations for dispersed crude oil on the deep-sea crustaceans collected from the Gulf of Mexico.

Data Parameters and Units:

Main parameters: Oil Loading (mg/L), Dispersant loading (µg/L), Estimated Oil Equivalents (EOE; µg/L), Total polyaromatic hydrocarbon (TPAH) concentration (µg/L), Temperature (°C), pH, Dissolved Oxygen (mg/L), Number of organisms per chamber (N), Nutrients (mg/L), number dead at each time (h). Chamber = the chamber number, Oil Loading= MC252 oil loaded into each chamber (mg/L), Dispersant= Corexit 9500 loading following oil addition (µg/L), N= number of crustaceans in the chamber, EOE concentrations: T0h, T24h, and T48h= EOE concentrations measured at each time (µg/L). EOE concentrations were measured using an Aqualog Horiba Fluorometer (Model: Aqualog-UV-800) TPAH concentration: T0h and T48h= TPAH concentrations measured at each time (µg/L). TPAH concentrations were measured using gas chromatography with mass spectrometric detection (Agilent 6890N GC/5975C inert MSD) in the selected ion mode (SIM) using a DB-5 fused silica capillary column. Temp48= measured temperature in each chamber at 48h (°C), pH48= pH in each chamber at 48h, DO48= dissolved oxygen in each chamber at 48h (mg/L), PO4= phosphate concentration in each chamber at 48h (mg/L), NH3= ammonia concentration in each chamber at 48h (mg/L), NO2= nitrate concentration in each chamber at 48h (mg/L), NO3=nitrate concentration in each chamber at 48h (mg/L). Chamber = the chamber number, Oil Loading= MC252 oil loaded into each chamber (mg/L), Time from exposure initiation: Each score listed is the number of dead crustaceans in each chamber.

Methods:

Size and Volume of tanks: 750 mL exposure chamber connected to 5 L dosing reservoir, operating experimental water volume 4750 mL. Source of water: laboratory system (artificial seawater).

Instruments:

Aqualog Horiba Fluorometer (Aqualog-UV-800). GCMS (Agilent 6890N GC/5975C inert MSD).
