Abstract:

Simulated spatial and temporal distribution of the numbers and biomass of eight fish species killed due to oil toxicity from 2000-01-01 to 2020-01-01. Numbers and biomass of dead fish are reported on January 1 of each year in each cell of a 421x1021 grid spanning 24°N-31°N and 98°W-81°W. The included species are red grouper, gag grouper, mutton snapper, red snapper, grey triggerfish, vermillion snapper, yellowedge grouper, and tilefish. This dataset is one of a set that uses statistical modeling and machine learning methods to simulate many aspects of fisheries research: example of logbook data from modeled commercial fishing fleets (DOI: 10.7266/n7-nwff-ap81, UDI: R5.x289.000:0001); population size and age data from simulated fish ecology (DOI: 10.7266/n7-scsn-ws67, UDI: R5.x289.000:0002); life history characteristics from a sample of the catch simulated commercial fishery (DOI: 10.7266/n7-bvvg-rz2, UDI: R5.x289.000:0003); spatial fishing effort with handline and longline fishing vessels (DOI: 10.7266/n7-gtwq-5y46, UDI: R5.x289.000:0006); spatial distribution of annual fish (DOI: 10.7266/n7-qf7p-gt16, UDI: R5.x289.000:0007); annual reported distribution of fish abundance and biomass (DOI: 10.7266/n7-1cb3-8j47, UDI: R5.x289.000:0008); and modelled reef fish abundance (DOI: 10.7266/7XFDXRD9, UDI: R5.x289.000:0009).

Data Parameters and Units:

TimeStep = the simulation day, which represents one actual day; Species = the common name of the fish species; X = the grid cell location reference for the x-axis, which can be converted to longitude using the conversion formulas in the methods section; Y = the grid cell location reference for the y-axis. Can be converted to latitude using the conversion formulas in the methods section; NumberDead = number of fish killed by oil toxicity that day and grid cell; BiomassKgDead = biomass of fish killed due to oil toxicity that day and grid cell [kg].

Methods:

A reference to the simulation model used to develop this data and its mathematical structure can be found in Saul et al., (2020). To convert X and Y values to longitude and latitude respectively, use the following parameters and conversion equations: minLongitude = -98; maxLongitude = -81; minLatitude = 24; maxLatitude = 31; GridWidth = 1021; GridHeight = 421. Longitude = minLongitude + ((X/GridWidth) * (maxLongitude - minLongitude)) Latitude = minLatitude + ((Y/GridHeight) * (maxLatitude - minLatitude)).
