Abstract:

The life history characteristics of a sample of the Gulf reef fish caught by each simulated commercial fishery. This includes measurements of length, weight, gender, and maturity. It also includes information on the date of the catch (i.e. simulation day), and location referenced as the grid cell. See data parameter section for the conversion from grid cell reference to latitude and longitude. This dataset is one of a suite of eight for which statistical methods and machine learning algorithms were used to simulate various measures of fish population health, including abundance surveys, mortality estimates, and fisheries catch and effort reports. Purpose:

To understand the life history structure of the simulated fish being harvested through a simulated commercial fishery.

Data Parameters and Units:

Schedule = unique trip identifier in the simulation. VesID = the unique vessel identifier in the simulation Time = the simulation day when the catch was made. Time steps are daily, thus every 365 days a new year begins. NMFSgrid = the location fished as corresponding to the National Marine Fisheries Service Gulf of Mexico Statistical Grids (see figure one in this document: https://www.ecologyandsociety.org/vol4/iss1/art15/) Depth = sea depth where catch was made in meters X = the grid cell location reference for the x-axis. Can be converted to longitude using the conversion formulas at the bottom of this parameter list Y = the grid cell location reference for the y-axis. Can be converted to latitude using the conversion formulas at the bottom of this parameter list Species = common name of the fish species TL = total length in millimeters WW = whole weight in milligrams sex = gender, male or female. Coded as a Boolean where false corresponds to female and true corresponds to male stage = the life history stage of the fish object at the time of capture. 1=immature juvenile; 2=mature and migrating offshore; 3=mature sedentary adult deepWaterGrouperClosed = seasonal closure for catching deepwater grouper. This was in place before the fishery moved to an ITQ system. It is a Boolean variable where true means the season is closed and false means the season is open. grouperSpawningClosed = seasonal closure for catching grouper during their spawning season. This was in place before the fishery moved to an ITQ system. It is a Boolean variable where true means the season is closed and false means the season is open. redSnapperClosure = seasonal closure for catching red snapper. This was in place before the fishery moved to an ITQ system. It is a Boolean variable where true means the season is closed and false means the season is open. tilefishClosed = seasonal closure for catching tilefish. This was in place before the fishery moved to an ITQ system.
