Abstract:

Experiments were performed with the bacterial species, Alcanivorax borkumensis which use lower molecular weight alkanes as the chief carbon source. This dataset includes bacterial growth curves in the presence of halloysite clay nanotubes, measured in different ways. The absorbance was measured in a UV-Vis Spectrometer at 600 nm wavelength giving us a parameter commonly known as optical density. The amount of fluorescence emitted by resorufin, a compound that is the product of enzymatic hydrolysis of resazurin was also measured. Purpose:

To examine the development of halloysite nanotubes as non-chemical dispersant for oil spill bioremediation and the proliferation of hydrocarbonoclastic bacteria in presence of emulsions formed by halloysite.

Figure 2: Growth of A. borkumensis in marine broth supplemented with 0.5% by vol. of n-hexadecane in presence of pristine halloysite clay nanotubes (HNT) and ODTMS halloysite (octadecyltrimethylsilazane). Control is the bacteria grown in the medium without halloysite. Using data from the exponential phase of those curves, we calculated generation time. The generation time is the time required for cells to double their number. Methods:

This dataset involves experiments with the bacterial species, Alcanivorax borkumensis which use lower molecular weight alkanes as the chief carbon source. Data are growth curves of the bacteria in presence of halloysite clay nanotubes, measured in different ways. One way is measuring the absorbance in a UV-Vis Spectrometer at 600 nm wavelength giving us a parameter commonly known as optical density. The second way is by measuring the amount of fluorescence emitted by resorufin, a compound that is the product of enzymatic hydrolysis of resazurin.
