Abstract:

In this project, the performances of 5 different combinations of Lecithin (L) and Tween 80 (T) in mobilizing a model hydrocarbon, n-hexadecane in porous formations were examined. This dataset contains original grayscale images of packed-beds captured via a microscope, and the images are analyzed using a thresholding technique to quantify the amount of n-hexadecane that was mobilized from the packed-beds using different surfactant flooding mixtures. Also, interfacial tension measurements for all the systems tested are included in the dataset. The various stages that the original images were subjected to achieving the thresholding technique are also added. This dataset supports the publication: Ezeh, C. G., Chen, C.-Y., & Papadopoulos, K. Purpose:

The dataset was acquired to objectively distinguish the performance of blends of Lecithin and Tween 80 blends of surfactant used to mobilize n-hexadecane trapped in porous media. Also, the interfacial tension measurement was carried out to see if there was a correlation between lower interfacial tension and n-hexadecane mobilization efficiency.

Data Parameters and Units:

The dataset contains five folders. All the figure/table numbers used in the file name and description here refers to the figure/table in the associated publication (Ezeh et al., 2018). Folder 1 includes images used to construct figures 5 and 6 in the paper. Folder 2 includes data used to generate figure 7; both excel files include intensity and number of pixels. Folder 3 includes cropped images used to obtain figure 9. Folder 4 includes the images that were binarized in the experiment. Folder 5 includes a summary of non-aqueous phase liquids (NAPLs) recovery result for the surfactant mixtures and interfacial tension measurement for the surfactant mixtures; Table 2.xlsx: Lecithin: Tween 80 Mixture, Average normalized White Pixel Percentage (%); Table 3.xlsx: Lecithin: Tween 80 Mixture, Interfacial Tension (mN/m).

Methods:

The setup of the packed bed was as described in the study of Zhu & Papadopoulos, 2012. The filter paper was used to block the right end of a micro-capillary tube while the tube was filled with water (deionized) and cryolite (Na3AlF6) particles from the other side. After adding hexane, the left of the capillary was connected to a syringe pump. All experiments were conducted with a flow rate of 1 microliter per minute. Images and videos were captured using the XCAPTM software of the microscope. These pictures were then analyzed using grayscale image analysis. Interfacial tension between hexadecane and surfactant mixtures was measured with the aid of the spinning drop tensiometry (Grace Instrument M6500 Spinning Drop Tensiometer) that is described in Princen et al.,1967.

Instruments:

Rame-hart goniometer was used for capturing the images for contact angle. Grace Instrument M6500 Spinning Drop Tensiometer was used for measuring interfacial tension via spinning drop technique, while Rame-hart goniometer was used for the pendant drop technique. Grayscale image of the packed-bed was captured with an Olympus IMT-2 inverted microscope.
