Abstract:

The dataset being shared is an illustrative example of how the vertical swimming speed of a purely phototactic algal cell changes as a function of the intensity of light incident upon it. This is in the file titled TI_vs_I.text. A readme.txt file describes in detail, the data organization and the formula used to generate the data.

Purpose:

The dataset is an illustrative example of the variation in a purely phototactic algal cell's vertical swimming speed as a function of light intensity. The cell swims vertically because it is illuminated from that direction. The swimming speed of the cell is given by the formula: Vs = T*Vs_0; where Vs_0 is a reference swimming speed of the algal cell. The data being shared contains the values of the variable T, which is a function of the dimensionless light intensity I.

Data Parameters and Units:

The data is given in the form of dimensionless numbers. The function T(I) can take values between -1 and +1, the dimensionless intensity I is the dimensional intensity, normalized by the intensity of the source of illumination. This value is based on the equation no. (24) in the paper by Ghorai and Hill, "Penetrative phototactic bioconvection", S. Ghorai and N. A. Hill, Physics of Fluids 17, 074101 (2005); doi: 10.1063/1.1947807): T(I) = 0.8*sin(3*pi/2*X(I)) - 0.1*sin(pi/2*X(I)); where X(I) = I*exp(b*(I - 1)), with b = 0.5.
