Abstract:

In this study, a Eulerian-Eulerian large-eddy simulation (LES) approach is used to model the gas bubble dissolution effect on the dynamics of the multiphase hydrocarbon plume in the stably stratified deep-water environment. The computational domain has a size of (700, 700, 700) m. Two different stratification conditions are considered. The first stratification condition has a linear temperature profile with a temperature gradient of 0.02 K/m and a density gradient of -4*10^{-6} kg/m^{-4}. The second stratification condition is based on the realistic oceanic stratification obtained from the Gulf of Mexico R/V Brooks McCall at Station B54 (2010-05-30, 28°43.945'N, 88°22.607'W). Resolution effects are explored with the linear stratification condition. The effects of initial droplet size and gas dissolution are explored with the realistic stratification condition. Data include instantaneous fields, vertical distribution, and time and annular averages of vertical velocity, oil concentration, and bubble mass at different model resolutions, initial bubble sizes, and bubble dissolution. Purpose:

The dataset includes the simulation and statistical analysis results obtained from large-eddy simulations to illustrate the effects of gas bubble dissolution on the dynamics of the hydrocarbon plume from the deep-water blowout.

Data Parameters and Units:

Full details of the simulation cases and parameters used in the simulations can be found in the "dataset_description.pdf" file included in the dataset. Briefly, included parameters are position [m], dye concentration [g/m^3], dissolved gas concentration [kg/m^3], bubble mass concentration [kg/m^3], velocities [m/s], oil mass concentration [kg/m^3], bubble number density [m^-3], buoyancy flux [kg m/s^2], momentum flux [x10^3 kg m/s^3], and bubble diameter [mm or nondimensionalized].

Methods:

The dataset is obtained using a Eulerian-Eulerian large-eddy simulation approach.
