Abstract:

This dataset contains the data output necessary to reproduce the figures in the paper, Aiyer, A. and C. Meneveau (2020). Most data are contained in compressed python files with an accompanying load/read script. Documentation in the read script specifies variable names. A dataset description document gives an overview of the data, including units. The data is generated from a 1D ODE model and from large eddy simulations (LES). The LES data consist of first-order velocity and concentration statistics and the droplet size distribution. The radial and axial distributions and the variability of key quantities such as the Sauter mean diameter, total surface area and droplet breakup time-scale were quantified and their sensitivity to the Weber number were explored. Purpose:

The study of the evolution of polydisperse oil droplets in a round turbulent jet.

Data Parameters and Units:

All the data required to generate the plots have been provided. Additionally, a brief description of the data and code snippet to read the data file has been provided in the pdf dataset description.

Methods:

The initial condition for the LES model is given by the solution to a 1-D ODE model which solves a population balance equation coupled with jet dynamics. The LES model grid is a rectangular box of physical dimensions 1 m x 1 m x 2.5m deep, with 288 x 288 x 384 grid points. The time step was 0.00006 seconds. The droplet size distribution ranges between 14 μm and 3000 μm.
