Abstract:
GoMix is a three year project with the goal of understanding the mechanisms, spatial inhomogeneity, and temporal intermittency of boundary mixing in the Northern Deepwater Gulf. There are several measurement platforms. This data set contains measurements obtained with two moorings of ~150 m height between 2018-06-22 and 2018-10-05. The moorings were deployed from the R/V Point Sur (PS18-28) at 28.825033°N, 88.4003°W in about 947 m of water; at 28.807967°N, 88.400633°W in about 993 m of water; and at 28.803°N, -88.49°W in about 993 m of water. These moorings were all equipped with downward-looking high frequency Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCPs), high precision temperature sensors, and Modular Acoustic Velocity Sensor (MAVS) temperature and velocity instruments.

Purpose:
Temperature and velocity structure data were collected in support of the GoMix project with the goal of understanding the mechanisms, spatial inhomogeneity, and temporal intermittency of boundary mixing along the Northern Deepwater Gulf.
Data Parameters and Units:
The RBR temperature data have the parameters time [Matlab format], temperature [degrees C]; the MAVS data have the parameters time [Matlab format], temperature [degrees C], U (zonal velocity component, [cm/s]), V (meridional velocity component, [cm/s]), and W (vertical velocity component, [cm/s]).
The RDCP data have the format Record [enum], Interval [7200 seconds], Time Tag GMT [DD.MM.YYYY HH:MM], Reference [54], Temperature [degrees C], Conductivity [mS/cm], Pressure [kPa], Oxygen [uM], Turbidity [FTU], Pitch [degrees], Roll [degrees], Heading [degrees], Salinity [ppt], Depth (calculated, [m]), Sound of speed [m/s], Battery voltage [V], Ping count, Pulse attenuation; North, East and Z velocity components for 5 m to 84 m in 1 m bins [cm/s]; Beam 1, Beam 2, Beam 3, and Beam 4 speeds for 5 m to 74 m in 1 m bins [cm/s]; Signal strength for 5 m to 84 m in 1 m bins [dB]; Standard deviation of speed for 5 m to 84 in 1 m bins [cm/s].
Methods:
Mooring 1 was deployed at (28.700°N, 88.623°W, water depth 947 m). It was originally instrumented with five SBE-37s, ten RBRs, three MAVS, and two RDCP. Data were returned by the RBRs (150 mab, 130 mb, 110 mab, 100 mab, 90 mab, 79 mab, 76.5 mab, 60 mab, 50 mab, 40 mab, 30 mab, 28 mab, 20 mab, 15 mab, 12.5 mab, and 7 mab); the MAVS (110 mab, 28 mab, and 12.5 mab); and the RDCPS (79 mab, 76.5 mab).
Mooring 2 was deployed at (28.6871°N, 88.610°W, water depth 993 m). It was instrumented with six SBE-37s, three MAVS, fourteen RBRs, and two RDCPs. Data were returned by thirteen RBRs (129.3 mab, 120 mab, 90 mab, 81.5 mab, 78.5 mab, 70 mab, 55 mab, 45 mab, 35 mab, 25 mab, 20 mab, 15 mab, 12.3 mab, and 6.8 mab); two MAVS (129.3 mab, 12.3 mab); and the RDCPs (81.5 mab, 78.5 mab). The RDCP at 78.5 mab returned less than two days of data.
