Abstract:
This dataset contains turbulence data collected from a vertical microstructure profiler (VMP-2000) during the September 2017 GoMix II cruise (R/V Point Sur, PS18_06) from 2017-08-18 to 2017-09-04. The experimental site is on the continental slope of the northern Gulf of Mexico, next to the Deepwater Horizon spill site. GoMix is a three-year project with the goal of understanding the mechanisms, spatial inhomogeneity and temporal intermittency of boundary mixing along the Northern Deepwater Gulf. The VMP used was a tethered instrument for vertical profiling of turbulence (VMP-2000) made by Rockland Scientific Inc. Temperature, salinity, velocity shear, and micro temperature were collected during the downcasts by the VMP-2000. The dataset includes the individual casts in binary (.p) and Matlab formats; a readme text file listing all possible parameters and their units; a text log file listing all events, and a summary file VMP_info.mat listing the geolocation and time data.
Data Parameters and Units:

Note that cfgobj is a structure which specifies the configuration values and has the structure obgobj(1:21).{k,v}, where k is the key and v the value of the key [i.e., cfgobj(1).v(1) gives k = ‘rate’, v = 512, cfgobj(1).v(2) gives k = ‘prefix’, v = ‘VMP_’.
VMP_info.mat contains a table listing profile name, time [Unix/epoch format], latitude [degrees N], longitude [degrees], and water depth [m].
