Abstract:
GoMix is a three-year project with the goal of understanding the mechanisms, spatial inhomogeneity, and temporal intermittency of boundary mixing in the northern deepwater Gulf of Mexico. There are several measurement platforms. This data set contains measurements obtained with three short moorings of ~75 meters in height between 2017-08-18 and 2018-03-03. The moorings were deployed from the R/V Point Sur (PS18_06) at (28.825033°N, -88.4003°W) in about 947 meters of water; at (28.807967°N, -88.400633°W) in about 993 meters of water; and at (28.803°N, -88.49°W) in about 993 meters of water. These moorings were all equipped with downward-looking high frequency Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) and high precision temperature sensors.

Purpose:
Temperature and velocity structure data were collected in support of the GoMix project with the goal of understanding the mechanisms, spatial inhomogeneity, and temporal intermittency of boundary mixing along the northern deepwater Gulf of Mexico.
Data Parameters and Units:
The RBR temperature data have the parameters time [Matlab/Unix epoch format], temperature [degrees C]; The SBE temperature data have the format temperature [degrees C], date [DD MMM YYYY], time [HH:MM:SS] in column format preceded by an ascii header.
The RDCP data have the format Record [enum], Interval [7200 seconds], Time Tag GMT [DD.MM.YYYY HH:MM], Reference [54], Temperature [degrees C], Conductivity [mS/cm], Pressure [kPa], Oxygen [uM], Turbidity [FTU], Pitch [degrees], Roll [degrees], Heading [degrees], Salinity [ppt], Depth (calculated, [m]), Sound of speed [m/s], Battery voltage [V], Ping count, Pulse attenuation; North, East and Z velocity components for 5 m to 74 m in 1 m bins [cm/s]; Beam 1, Beam 2, Beam 3, and Beam 4 speeds for 5 m to 74 m in 1 m bins [cm/s]; Signal strength for 5 m to 74 m in 1 m bins [dB]; Standard deviation of speed for 5 m to 74 in 1 bins [cm/s].
Methods:
Mooring 1 was deployed at (28.825033°N, -88.4003°W, water depth 947 meters). It was originally instrumented with five SBE-37s, five RBRs, and a RDCP. Partial data were recovered from this mooring, which broke loose and was returned by a citizen. RBR 102254 was deployed at 40.5 m above the bottom (mab), RBR 102264 at 63 mab, and the RDCP at 7 mab, looking down.
Mooring 2 was deployed at (28.807967°N, -88.400633°W, water depth 993 m). It was instrumented with five RBRs (102259, 5.5 mab; 102253, 15.5 mab; 102252, 35.5 mab; 102251, 45.5 mab; 102260, 70.5 mab); five SBE-37s (0630, 25.5 mab; 0644, 55.5 mab; 0645, 65.5 mab; 0686, 70.5 mab; 0623, 75.5 mab); and two RDCPs (0052, 68 mab, looking down; 0025, 74 mab, looking up).
Mooring 3 was deployed at (28.803°N, -88.49°W, 993 m). It was instrumented with five RBRs (102258, 16 mab; 102263, 25 mab; 102257, 43 mab; 102255, 52 mab; 102250, 70 mab); five SBE-37s (0653, 9 mab; 0688, 34 mab; 0789, 61 mab; 0693, 79 mab; and 0694, 85 mab); and one RDCP (0248, 82 mab).
The RDCP data were binned in 2 m cells with 50% overlap.
