Abstract:
Concentrations of the 16 EPA priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were measured over a period of one year at three different sites (near water, mid beach, upper beach) in the sandy beach sediment at Pensacola Beach, Florida (30°19'32.4"N 87°10'29.5"W) from 2010-06-30 to 2011-06-16. Sediments were collected at different depths over 12 months and PAH were extracted and analyzed with an Agilent 7890A GC equipped with an Agilent 7000 Triple Quadrupole MS. PAHs measured were: Naphthalene, Acenaphthylene, Acenaphthene, Fluorene, Anthracene, Phenanthrene, Pyrene, Fluoranthene, Benzo(a)anthracene, Chrysene, Benzo(a)pyrene, Benzo(b)fluoranthene, Benzo(k)fluoranthene, Indeno[1,2,3-cd]pyrene, Benzo(g,h,i)perylene, Dibenz(a,h)anthracene.

Data Parameters and Units:
Parameters: Date (Date of sample collection, DD-MON-YY); Sites (High site, Mid site, Low site); Depth range (Depth of sediments collected, cm); concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in 3 parts of the beach (near water, mid beach, upper beach).
The concentration of PAHs is presented in μg kg-1. The PAHs measured are Naphthalene, Acenaphthylene, Acenaphthene, Fluorene, Anthracene, Phenanthrene, Pyrene, Fluoranthene, Benzo(a)anthracene, Chrysene, Benzo(a)pyrene, Benzo(b)fluoranthene, Benzo(k)fluoranthene, Indeno[1,2,3-cd]pyrene, Benzo(g,h,i)perylene, Dibenz(a,h)anthracene.
Methods:
Extraction, cleanup and analysis were completed following the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection Method for the Determination of Extractable Petroleum Hydrocarbons (EPH, based on EPA Methods 610, 8270D and 8275A), EPA Method 3541 for Automated Soxhlet Extraction, and EPA Method 3630c for Silica Gel Cleanup.
