Abstract:

In situ cores created using unoiled Pensacola beach sand and Pensacola beach sand with the addition of weathered crude oil (GRIIDC dataset R5.x278.000:0010) were incubated in the laboratory. A trough with dimensions 90 x 50 x 40 cm and a computer-controlled pump worked as a tide simulator to mimic Pensacola beach. Oxygen was measured every 15 minutes using Hach rigid 02 optodes. This dataset contains laboratory measurements of oxygen and supports the publication: Huettel, M., Overholt, W.A., Kostka, J.E., Hagan, C., Kaba, J., Wells, W.B., & Dudley, S. (2018). Purpose:

This experiment investigated the effect of tidal pumping on oxygen concentration in Pensacola beach sand in order to determine whether the pumping can significantly increase oxygen concentration within the beach.

Methods:

Calibrated 15 minute raw data measurements (reported in fraction of day), the oxygen recordings from the control sediment, without oil and the oxygen recordings for the sediment with oil addition. The oxygen recordings were interrupted after 67 days for a period of 211 days in order to keep the oxygen sensors from deteriorating, the gap in the oxygen data was intentional. The oxygen sensor implanted in the control sediment failed between days 34 and 37 and during day 51.
