Abstract:

This dataset includes the abundances of adult insect families that were collected monthly from 18 sites across the salinity gradient within Barataria and Caillou Bays in coastal Louisiana from 2018-07-13 until 2019-06-23. The abundances of adult insect families are reported for each collection date, bay, salinity zone, and site.

Purpose:

This data was collected to determine how Louisiana's coastal insect families vary by salinity and to act as baseline data for future studies on how marsh loss or freshwater and sediment diversions effect marsh insect communities.

Methods:

Insects were collected monthly by sweep net from 2018-07-13 to 2019-06-23 from both Barataria and Caillou Bays. During each monthly collection, five sweep net transects consisting of 10 sweeps each were taken at each site. The adult insects were identified to the family level using the keys developed by McAlpine 1981 and Triplehorn and Johnson 2005. The family-level abundances of the insects collected from each sweep net transect from a single site were summed into a single sample resulting in 72 samples per salinity zone.
